ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONS:
Black Hole Drop. This expedition starts off with a vigorous hike into the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The edge of the Actun Loch Tunich sink hole sits over 300 feet above the basin below. Fully trained caving guides rig a system of rappelling ropes for your decent to the basin below. The first 10 feet provides the adrenaline, the next 200 feet provides an unforgettable experience and sights to behold, the last 100 feet takes you down through the rainforest canopy.
River Cave Expedition: Don your headlight and grab an inner tube. This adventure requires a short paddle upstream to the mouth of the cave, and a hike within the cave system exploring remnants of the Maya past, before settling in for the glide downstream and out of the cave. Enjoy a unique lunch by lamplight inside the cave!
Xunantunich & River Kayak. This Classic period (300-900 AD) ceremonial center showcases large plazas ringed with pyramids. The center is composed of six major plazas surrounded by more than 25 temples and palaces. We highly recommend that you make the steep, but short, 130ft climb to the top of "El Castillo." This vantage point provides a breathtaking, 360 degree, panoramic view over the jungle canopy of the Macal, Mopan and Belize River valleys, as well as a vast area of the Guatemalan Peten District. Then grab your paddle for a kayak trip downriver. Seek out parrots, birds, and the sunning iguanas along the jungle lined river. Navigate gentle rapids and paddle along wide open stretches – a great opportunity for beginners or experienced paddlers.
ATM Cave & Jungle Hike. After an exciting drive, you will trek for 45 minutes through dense Jungle in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and wade across three streams. Some swimming will be required and also climbing and Caving activity. This is a first class Caving and Archaeological experience. Actun Tunichil Muknal "Cave of the Stone Sepulcher" is one of the most impressive caves in the Maya Lowland. The cave system consists of a series of chambers, ending in a large Cathedral where sacrificial ceremonies once took place. Here lay those individuals sacrificed to the gods of the underworld. Visitors to this cave have the opportunity to witness a living museum where the human sacrifices and artifacts can be viewed in their original context.
Green Acres Horseback Adventure. Beginner & novice riders are welcomed – our experienced wranglers and gentle horses will put you at ease. Giddy up for an amazing ride through the orange orchards, across streams, up hills and through the jungle. Cross the Sibun River head for the cocoa fields of the Hershey Company. The cocoa fruit, highly revered among the Maya, was eaten and enjoyed and the seeds traded like currency! Your guide explains how this “Food of the Gods” is cultivated and used today.
Barton Creek Cave Canoe. Hidden within the small Mennonite Community of Barton Creek are the remnants of an ancient Mayan civilization silently waiting to be explored in the cool, dark underground caverns of the Barton Creek Cave. This Cave was a center for ritualistic activities including human sacrifices, bloodletting rituals and fertility rites. This ancient wonder can be explored only by canoe. Stretching one to two miles underground visitors drift along in their canoes and marvel at the glittering stalactites and stalagmites, some 50 feet in length; the eerie remains of human bones; centuries-old clay pots, some in perfect form and tiny remnants of cultural Mayan artifacts. A swim in the cold underground river is truly an incredible experience.
Cave Tubing & Zip Line. Grab a tube and head off on the jungle trail to the cave entrance. Enter an exciting realm where rivers disappear into the underworld as you float on inner tubes with only your headlamp to lead the way. Glide past entrances from above, filtering mists of jungle light, as you float through underground river caves sparkling with mica-studded stalactites and stalagmites. The Aerial Trek is a zip-line tour through the broadleaf rainforest. The tour features an intricate harness system of pulleys on horizontal traverse cables which lets you “zip” 100 – 124 feet between treetop platforms secured 70 feet high at canopy level. This level literally gives you a bird’s eye view of all the tropical palms and trees. Start with a ten minute hike through the rainforest to the starting platform, and then take flight through the forest with the birds – a truly unforgettable experience!
Tikal. With over 3000 structures including many extensive temples, declared a National Park in 1955, and later upgraded to National Monument for its extraordinary cultural importance and immense variety of flora and fauna, Tikal became a Cultural World Heritage in 1979. Tikal is an adventure that you should experience. Hidden by dense jungle until the 19th century, Tikal reprincipals one of the most breathtaking archaeological sites of the Maya World. Visitors can only get a sense of the power and immensity of Tikal after climbing up Temple IV and looking out over the expansive site to view the distant temples protruding through the canopy. Structures unearthed at Tikal include temples, palaces, living quarters, ball courts, and a sauna.
Half Day Adventures:
Belize Zoo. A visit to the zoo is the best introduction to the animals of Belize and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats that sustain them. The Zoo is settled upon 29 acres of tropical savanna and exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize. The zoo keeps animals which were orphaned, born at the zoo, rehabilitated animals, or sent to The Belize Zoo as gifts from other zoological institutions.
Baboon Sanctuary. A unique conservation effort protects the population and habitat of Belize's Black Howler Monkey, affectionately called "baboons". Within an area of approximately 20 square miles, straddling the mighty Belize River, the Baboon Sanctuary combines dense jungle with farmland, pasture, and small village life. The Black Howler Monkey is the largest monkey in the Americas, and found only in a small section of Central America. In fact, the total howler monkey population within the sanctuary is about equal to that of the humans-at 1000-1500 each! There is little that can describe the cacophony of these wild creatures, when heard for the first time, howling right overhead. See the myriad species of trees, plants, birds and other creatures that live in this specially preserved environment: Iguana, crocodiles, anteaters, turtles, and Howler monkeys of course!
Cave Tubing.
